Landfill
Project
The Problem
Within the next decade a huge quarry at Rowley
Regis will be completely filled with waste
generated by the remaining years of the 20th
century and the area will once again return to it
natural landscape.
To make this possible, quarry owners needed to
construct a new road right down into the lowest
levels to allow Landfill access to infill waste in
a controlled and systematic way. In doing so a
large area of quarry 'hillside' needed to be stabilized.
The Solution
To engineer and install
a earth retaining wall to ensure the safe passage
of landfill vehicles.
The foundations were arranged in 15 steps on
the hillside and with a large part of this
retaining wall having tandem foundations for the
double depth configuration due to the heights
involved.

The Result
The wall is a sacrificial structure and will be
progressively buried and crossed with
reinstated footpaths and eventually landscaped
over the next 15 year period. This produced for the
landfill company, a solution which utilized
"on site" materials combined with the
structural components from renewable timber
sources to compliment the environmentally friendly
aspects of this scheme.
